A Bit of Context
In nearly every Mainstream workshop and mentoring program I attended, I remember witnessing an undercurrent of nervousness build as participants started working on their niche and client avatar.
As the participants got deeper into these exercises, I observed the level of distress, frustration, and despair rise for those who could not answer the questions. As I tuned into this pattern, I saw this response in the back of the room during weekend workshops, in hallways during breaks, in online communities, and in my one-on-one conversations with new business mentoring clients.
This ever-present disconnect has always frustrated me! More than once over the years, I asked myself:
Why isn’t there a better way
to bring new Change Catalysts up to speed
on how to create and grow a viable business?
Now I know that the Mainstream Approach to creating a business doesn’t work well for those who are bringing a new business into existence. When our work is first emerging, we aren’t clear enough about the business we want to grow. As a result, it is difficult to define our niche and name our ideal client on demand!
I once falsely assumed that only Seasoned Change Catalysts were impacted by this damaging disconnect that is baked into the Mainstream Approach. But the conversation I had with the student I describe at the beginning of my new podcast episode was my wake-up call!
I immediately realized that this dynamic, which I knew had stunted the success of many Seasoned Change Catalysts, is also playing out for new, Emerging Change Catalysts. Based on my experience, I have insights to share with new Change Catalysts to help them avoid this derailing pattern.
