Coming Home to Yourself - Your First Priority

As I was writing my previous blog post (read it here), I remembered the times Coming Home to Myself served as a catalyst for a much-needed pivot in my perspective. I share two of these stories in this blog post.

Do you ever get to the point where you ask the same questions over and over? And then you find you are getting the same answers over and over? This is a good sign that you are in a rut in how you are thinking about your situation.

The flip side of this pattern is that you find you have a new answer every time you ask yourself questions. As you collect more and more answers, it gets harder and harder to discern which action to take.

These two patterns tend to surface when you are:

  • Trying to make a big decision
  • Navigating an unexpected shift in your reality and you can't figure out what to do
  • Searching for a new angle on your business because what you are doing feels stale
  • Facing a maze of choices to make as you start your new business or create a new offer

When you aren't landing on answers that feel right to you, you don't feel confident in your decisions. Without confidence, you won't be able to follow through to bring your new ideas to life.

The key to feeling grounded in your choices is making sure you are making decisions that align with all of who you are. That's precisely where Coming Home to Yourself comes in.

My First Experience of Coming Home to Myself

When I was 29 years old, I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I was so exhausted a ten-minute walk down the street with my golden retriever, Sunrise, put me in bed for 3-4 hours. Somehow I managed to keep up with my job in the corporate world as long as I went home and took a nap every day during my lunch hour. Every trip to the grocery store felt like a marathon. My social life was pretty much non-existent. I worked, I slept, and I did everything I could to heal.

Soon after my diagnosis, I realized I needed to create a new life/career for myself. One that allowed me to ebb and flow with my natural rhythms. At first, I tried to use logic to sort out my next career move. But I could never get to an idea that felt right to me.

Then I asked myself a new question: How do I want to FEEL in my work? This question opened new pathways in my brain. This somatic access allowed me to connect with what felt nourishing and nurturing to me. My discoveries stretched what I thought I was supposed to want. I expanded my vision of what was possible and what felt right!

My sensitive soul felt supported in a way that my corporate-employee persona had never experienced.

Eighteen months after I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, I left my corporate job to start a business that aligned with my needs, my rhythms, and my desires. Thirty-two years later, I'm still in business in ways that matches my natural way of being.

Fast Forward...

When we relocated to Northwest Oregon in 2015 and I made the decision to release my previous business, Green Career Central, I was once again at a crossroads with my career. I reached back to the past and pulled the same question forward.

As I tried to disentangle myself from the Mainstream Strategies I'd been taught during my quest to grow Green Career Central, I added a few other questions to the mix as well. I knew I needed to find a way of doing business that supported every part of me in feeling whole, engaged, and aligned in my work with clients. (Notice this discovery is another octave of the same themes that surfaced much earlier in my career.)

By Coming Home to Myself, I was able to envision an entirely new way of choosing my new focus, designing various aligned offerings, developing and testing various concepts, and doing deep, meaningful work with Change Catalysts who are as intuitive, sensitive, and nuanced as I am.

In the process of strengthening the roots of my foundation, I ended up being shown how to bring to life my Organic Way of developing and growing an aligned business.

It's always inspiring to look back at where I was in late 2014 (think struggle, frustration, and questioning everything about my business) and where I am now with my business (think flow, excitement, and trusting the flow of my business growth).
